Why Lifting at School Isn't Enough for Most Athletes - Cedar Park Athlete Training

If your athlete already lifts at school, it’s easy to assume they’re fully covered.

After all, they’re in the weight room. They’re following a program. They’re working hard.

But for many middle-school and high-school athletes, school lifting alone leaves important gaps — especially when it comes to long-term development, injury prevention, and individual progress.

This isn’t a knock on school coaches. It’s about understanding how school weight rooms are designed and what they realistically can (and can’t) provide.

Here at Barbell Coalition in Cedar Park, we create training programs designed individually for each athlete who walks through our doors.

School Programs Are Built for Groups, Not Individuals

In most school weight rooms, one coach is responsible for 20–60 athletes at a time.

That means programs are written to be:

  • Simple to manage

  • Easy to run with large groups

  • One-size-fits-most

What often gets lost is:

  • Individual movement limitations

  • Training history

  • Strength imbalances

  • Sport-specific demands

Two athletes might follow the same workout even though one needs more strength and the other needs more power or mobility.

Technique Feedback Is Limited

Good lifting technique matters — especially for young athletes.

In a crowded school weight room:

  • Coaches can’t watch every rep

  • Athletes often rush through sets

  • Poor habits go uncorrected

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Slower progress

  • Plateaus

  • Higher injury risk

Small technical mistakes repeated hundreds of times add up.

Progression Is Often Inconsistent

For athletes to improve, training needs planned progression.

In many school settings:

  • Programs change with seasons or coaching schedules

  • Percentages aren’t tracked consistently

  • Load progressions are unclear

This can lead to athletes working hard without seeing measurable improvement in:

  • Strength

  • Speed

  • Power

Effort matters — but structure matters more.
