If you're a parent of a growing athlete, you've probably heard this before:
Lifting weights can stunt your child's growth!
It’s one of the most persistent fears out there—and it’s completely false.
Let’s break down why strength training is not only safe for teens, but one of the best things they can do for their development.
Where Did This Myth Come From?
The idea that weightlifting stunts growth likely came from outdated beliefs and a few misinterpreted injuries in poorly supervised environments.
But today, the science is clear.
There is zero evidence that strength training stunts growth when done correctly.
In fact, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, properly designed youth strength programs are safe, effective, and recommended.

How Strength Training Supports Growth
Here’s what actually happens when teens lift weights under proper supervision:
Increased bone density→ Resistance training stimulates bone growth, making bones stronger and more resilient.
Improved joint stability→ Stronger muscles protect joints from injury, especially as sport demands increase.
Better posture and movement patterns→ Essential during growth spurts when coordination can dip.
Higher levels of natural growth hormones→ Strength training can stimulate the production of growth hormone, which supports physical development.
What Can Stunt Growth?
Here’s what actually poses a threat to a young athlete’s development:
Poor sleep
Chronic stress
Under-eating (especially protein)
Overuse injuries from only playing one sport year-round
Lack of movement variety or physical literacy
None of that has to do with lifting weights. In fact, a well-structured strength program helps address all of those issues.

Safety Comes Down to How They Train
Strength training is only dangerous when it’s:
Poorly supervised
Ego-driven
Programmed for adults
Focused only on max lifting with bad form
At Barbell Coalition here in Cedar Park, our training does the opposite for athletes.
We focus on technique first, use age-appropriate progressions, and build balanced strength & movement.
