Cedar Park Speed Training: How We Make Our Youth Athletes Faster

Speed is a game-changer in almost every sport. I probably don't have to tell you that.
Whether your child is a baseball player trying to steal second base, a soccer player racing down the field, or a football player breaking away for a touchdown — speed separates good athletes from great ones.
At Barbell Coalition, our program is designed to give youth athletes the edge they need to dominate their competition.
We don’t rely on gimmicks or quick fixes. Our approach is built on proven strength and conditioning principles that improve not only top-end speed but also acceleration, agility, and explosiveness.
Here's how our training improves the speed of Cedar Park & Leander youth athletes:
Strength is the Foundation of Speed
Speed isn't just about how fast an athlete can move their legs - speed starts with strength.
Without a solid foundation of strength, and athlete cannot gain the speed they desire. They won't be able to generate the power necessary to accelerate or maintain top speed.
At Barbell Coalition, we like to focus on building lower body and core strength through movements like:
Trap Bar Deadlifts
Squats
Romanian Deadlifts
With increased overall strength, athletes can apply more force into the ground with each step - and that's the key to improving speed.
Plyometric and Power Development
Speed comes down to how quickly and powerfully an athlete can apply force into the ground. This is where plyometrics and power training come into play.
With our athletes, we love to use movements like:
Jump Squats
Trap Bar Jumps
Broad Jumps
All with the intention of building fast-twitch muscle fibers, which will directly translate to faster sprinting, and quicker movements in-game.
Strength and Muscle Does Not Make Athletes Slower
This is a tired old myth that seems to not want to go away.
There's easy evidence for why muscle growth is beneficial for athletes.
Let's just look at some of the top athletes in the world like Saquon Barkley, Shohei Ohtani, or Jayson Tatum.
One thing they all have in common...they're jacked!
And they're also extremely fast!
Need I say more...strength and muscle growth is a necessity for athletes who want to be faster in their sport.
