Here at Barbell Coalition in Cedar Park, TX, we train a lot of different athletes. But no matter the sport, there's one thing we regularly hear from parents and sport coaches, and that is the word "agility."
But, what is agility? And how do we train our athletes to have better agility? Well, the truth is that agility isn't always something you train directly in the gym.
This is because, by definition, agility is a rapid whole-body movement with change of velocity or direction in response to a stimulus.
This means the moments where high-level agility is needed happen under unpredictable circumstances while in-game in response to an opponents movements, ball movement etc.

This is why tools like an agility ladder are almost useless (unless you need to save a cat from a tree), and a tremendous waste of an athlete's training time.
But, in the gym we can better prepare our athletes to have more power in their ability to sprint, cut, and change direction quickly, and let them hone in on their skills and technique during sport practice. This combination is what creates elite-level agility in an athlete.
So, a youth athlete's gym time is much better spent lifting heavy weights under supervision from a strength & conditioning specialist (Hey 👋) to be prepared for those unpredictable moments in-game, while also working on their technique, skill and reaction time during sport practice.
This is how we approach our agility training for youth athletes in Cedar Park.
