It's that time again! Spring is right around the corner, meaning it's almost baseball season again.
At Barbell Coalition, our baseball crew has been training hard to have their best seasons yet.
To make our Cedar Park baseball players faster, stronger, and more powerful, there are certain strategies that we'll use in the gym.
Baseball is a game of explosive movements—a quick sprint to first base, a powerful throw across the diamond, or a hard-hit line drive, so it's important that our baseball players are fast & powerful.
1. Focusing on Strength as the Foundation
Every powerful movement in baseball originates from a strong base. At Barbell Coalition, we prioritize building lower-body and core strength to maximize force production.
Exercises like trap bar deadlifts, squats, and weighted lunges are staples in our programming, as they directly translate to sprinting speed and batting power.
We balance this with upper-body work, focusing on pressing and pulling movements to enhance arm strength for throwing and bat speed. By combining strength with mobility work, our athletes not only generate more power but also reduce the risk of injury.
2. Incorporating Plyometrics
Explosiveness is essential for baseball success, and plyometric exercises are one of the best ways to develop it. By focusing on movements that train the stretch-shortening cycle, we help athletes generate power quickly and efficiently.
Our programming includes exercises like broad jumps, box jumps, depth jumps, and lateral bounds to improve lower-body explosiveness.
Medicine ball slams and rotational throws enhance upper-body power and transfer force effectively. These dynamic movements mimic the quick bursts required for sprinting, throwing, and hitting.
3. In-Season Training for Sustained Performance
Many athletes and parents believe training should take a back seat during the season. At Barbell Coalition, we take a different approach: maintaining a structured, lighter training program in-season.
Why? Because strength and power can decline significantly over the course of a long season.
Our in-season program emphasizes maintaining the progress athletes made in the offseason without overloading them.
We reduce overall volume but keep intensity high with key lifts and explosive movements. This ensures that players stay sharp and powerful as the season wears on.
For example, an in-season workout might include:
Low-volume, high-intensity squats or trap bar deadlifts
Medicine ball throws for rotational power
Recovery-focused mobility work to stay fresh
This approach helps our athletes perform at their peak during games and reduces their risk of mid-season burnout or injury.
4. Developing Rotational Power
Hitting and throwing both require immense rotational power.
To build this, we use a combination of medicine ball throws, cable rotations, and landmine presses.
These exercises mimic the rotational demands of the sport and improve the transfer of force from the lower body through the core and into the upper body.
By training in all planes of motion, we ensure our athletes’ power translates directly to the diamond, whether they’re hitting home runs or gunning down a runner at home plate.
5. Enhancing Agility and Quickness
Baseball demands quick reactions and sharp directional changes. To improve our athletes' agility and footwork, we include drills like ladder drills, cone drills, and short shuttle sprints.
These exercises not only improve quickness but also enhance body control, balance, and coordination.
By simulating game-like movements, our athletes develop the ability to react faster, whether they’re stealing bases or tracking down fly balls in the outfield.
